The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed Baker Mayfield to a one-year contract worth up to $8.5 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, adding veteran competition to their quarterback position. Although it’s uncertain whether Mayfield will start the 2023 season for the Buccaneers, the team could theoretically hand the offensive reins to second-round draft pick Kyle Trask.
Mayfield, a former No. 1 overall pick, struggled after leaving the Cleveland Browns last season. He was traded to the Carolina Panthers in July and started the season as their quarterback, going 1-4 before getting hurt in Week 5. He served mostly as a backup after that but was thrust back into the starting lineup in Week 11 after P.J. Walker was injured. The Panthers released him in December, and he was picked up off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams. Although Mayfield’s numbers improved with the Rams, his fourth-quarter game-winning drive remained the high point of his tenure with the franchise.
