If the sale of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft doesn’t go through, there could be another suitor in line. Rumors suggest that Comcast is interested in acquiring the gaming giant in such a scenario. As a company facing a declining stock price, Comcast has been actively seeking significant deals across various industries. I have heard reports that NBCUniversal, a Comcast subsidiary, has previously explored a potential merger with EA, showcasing their interest in the gaming sector.
According to industry analysts, there is a possibility of Comcast acquiring Activision Blizzard. Alongside Comcast, Take-Two Interactive and Nintendo are also being considered as potential gaming partners. To enter the gaming space, Comcast might explore long-term content deals or exclusive game commissions, taking inspiration from the successful partnership between Netflix and Ubisoft.
It’s worth noting that Activision Blizzard is in a financially healthy position. In the event that the Microsoft acquisition offer is abandoned, they would receive a substantial $3 billion breakup fee. Microsoft’s attempt to close the deal would involve forfeiting its cloud gaming business in the UK. Currently, the company has filed an appeal following the rejection by the UK, and the proposal will undergo further review later this year.
