Meta, the parent company of Facebook, plans to lay off around 10,000 employees and close 5,000 open roles in the coming months, as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “Year of Efficiency” plan. This follows last November’s 11,000 layoffs. The restructuring plan includes sweeping organizational changes, guided by principles such as “flatter is faster” and “leaner is better.” The layoffs begin with recruiting teams on March 15, with other employees finding out in April and May. Some changes may not happen until the end of 2023, and international teams may have a different timeline. Zuckerberg said the previous workforce reduction had resulted in faster progress and underestimated the indirect costs of lower-priority projects. Meta joins other tech giants in making cuts that have led to tens of thousands left unemployed.
